Just Looking
THE SUBSTATION, MELBOURNE, 2014
Just Looking explores how fashion shapes the way we look at each other and how being looked at affects how we feel. The work emerged from my experience wearing skin tight onesies across different contexts - from inner city Melbourne to a small village in India where reactions ranged from admiration to ridicule.
In the gallery, 25 different characters occupied the space dressed in everyday clothes and interacted with visitors only through eye contact and body language. By blurring the boundary between performer and audience, the work examined vulnerability, power and the feeling of “nakedness” that can arise through another person’s gaze.
